Our Process
Define
We start by defining the issue. What are we trying to solve? Why are we trying to solve it? By ensuring we understand the issues we are trying to solve and why, it allows to target our process around these points.
Research
Once the parameters around the design project have been defined, we research the problem we are trying to solve. We do this by not just researching existing products & solutions, but also by researching the factors which led to a new solution needing to be discovered.
Concept
After some initial research, we can begin to conceptualise different ideas and solutions. These concepts vary from quick sketches to detailed CAD models we can render & run simulations with. They may also include rough prototypes, as we ideate a range of solutions which can then be evaluated.
Develop
Once we have narrowed down the concepts to a select few based on suitability for the design issue & feasibility to progress further within the scope of the project, we then begin to develop these ideas further. This may include CAD models of major components, more detailed prototypes, cost analysis and estimates, and identifying potential issues which may appear in the products further development and manufacturing, and how these might be overcome.
Feedback & Test
Throughout the development process we will offer to consult with the client / end user to ensure the ideas we are developing are in line with there expectations for the project. Once the current strongest solutions have been identified, we would also take the time at this stage to collect user feedback, either from the client or there potential user base.
Improve & Optimise
Once we have established with the client and users a final developed idea to take further, we then begin to refine the idea and develop it ready for market / manufacture. This could include FEA, developing manufacturing drawings using CADD, costing the final product, and researching suppliers / manufacturers to get the design made.
Outcome
Once we have a final product / design that the client is happy to proceed with, there are a range of areas in which we can help you take this project through to manufacture. Whether we simply provide technical CAD drawings of the product, help locate suppliers and manufacturers, or even get the product manufactured for you through the network of suppliers we work with, Form Lab will be able to help making your design a reality.
