formLAB has recently submitted work to 2 design competitions; the first, a stage for an event in Gastown (summer 2005), and the other for a public art piece in Newton.

FRONTIERSPACE - Conceptual Statement
Gastown has historically been an intersection of cultures, a transportation hub from Canada and Asia, an exotic port of sails and waves, and an overlay of social strata. Taking its formal cues from influences as diverse as a Chinese Junk, the hull of a freightship, skateboard ramp or Gassy Jack’s curves, the mixed metaphor that is the SKAGE plays with the juxtaposition of swamping wave onboard with angled urban bank on its leeside, and references the generations of technologies that have transported the history of Gastown into our modern urban reality with its lines of transit, Skytrain and Seabus.
The translucent covered roof is both prosaic weather protection and a more poetic reference to naval sails billowing in the elements. The front and rear entrance ramps serve both as performer access and to activate the space by encouraging pedestrians to cross and interact with the SKAGE during casual day use. This casual, informal day/night activity flow will break down performer/audience barriers. At an oblique angle in the alley, the SKAGE allows the largest angle of access to users from both sides, and also allow multiple angles for viewing the performances at night. The SKAGE is an exotic visitor paying a temporary visit to share its energies with the here and now.

pathWAVE - Conceptual Statement
The pathWAVE is an intersection of lines, of influences, and of forms bisecting words and ideas. It takes its cue from the histories of the peoples who have traversed these paths, from the identities of those within the community and from the idea of community itself. We propose to construct a sculpture at the convergence of pathways within the public space between the Wave Pool and the Arena of the Newton Recreation Centre. There will be three short pathways in concrete, inset with words and images specific to on each of the following: history, community, identity. The main sculpture itself will be a steel wave form, to echo the idea of how the tides of history create the waves of change.
